Homicide Offences

The act of trying to carry out a plan of murder. The intention to take a life is enough for charges to be laid.

A killing that is planned and deliberate, such as a contract killing.

Can be culpable or non-culpable and includes infanticide, manslaughter, and first and second-degree murders.

A law that is specific to women. When a mother causes the death of her newborn child by a wilful act or omission.

Manslaughter is culpable homicide that is neither murder nor infanticide. It can arise from an unlawful act or criminal negligence causing death.

Second-degree murder is murder that does not fall into a first-degree category under section 231. It is not defined simply by whether the killing was planned.
